About marakileleonischool.co.ke

Mara Kileleoni School is a community-centered institution located in the heart of the Maasai Mara, Kenya. It was established to provide education to children from pastoral communities, who often face challenges such as long distances, wildlife risks, and limited access to learning opportunities.

Surrounded by wild animals like elephants, lions, and buffalo, the school offers a safe and secure environment for learning. We teach not only academic subjects but also how to live in harmony with the natural world.

Many of our learners come from families that struggle to afford school fees. Some children require the support of well-wishers and sponsors to stay in school and access essentials like books, uniforms, and meals. With this support, we are able to give more children a chance to build a better future through education.

At Mara Kileleoni School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive—regardless of their background or circumstances.

Active Playing

Active play is an important part of everyday life at Mara Kileleoni. During breaks and physical education sessions, children enjoy the chance to run, jump, and explore through fun games and group activities.

Through playing football, skipping rope, traditional games, and team challenges, learners build strong bodies, develop coordination, and learn valuable social skills like teamwork and fair play. Our spacious outdoor environment allows pupils to move freely, laugh loudly, and enjoy the joys of childhood.

We believe that when children play actively, they stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn.

Learning

We follow the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which focuses on developing practical skills, creativity, critical thinking, and communication. Our classrooms are active learning spaces where pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, and learn by doing.

Key learning areas include:

  • Literacy and Language (Englishand Kiswahili)

  • Mathematics

  • Environmental Studies

  • Religious and Moral Education

  • Creative Arts and Music

  • Science and Technology (for upper classes)

  • Life Skills and Health Education

Our dedicated teachers use simple teaching aids, storytelling, songs, and group work to make learning engaging and effective — even with limited resources.

We also encourage learning outside the classroom through nature walks, cultural activities, and hands-on projects that connect students with their environment and community.

Every child at Mara Kileleoni is given the opportunity to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially — one lesson at a time.

Languages

we understand the power of language in education and in life. Our language program helps learners become confident in reading, writing, and speaking in multiple languages.

We focus on three key languages:

  • 🇰🇪 Kiswahili – As Kenya’s national language, Kiswahili helps our students communicate across communities and understand their country better.

  • 🇬🇧 English – As the language of instruction, English is essential for academic success and future opportunities.

Feeding program

Many of our pupils come from homes where regular meals are not guaranteed. To help them stay healthy, focused, and active in class, we run a simple but life-changing feeding program.

Each school day, we provide:

  • Morning porridge to give children energy and help them concentrate.

  • A basic lunch, often consisting of maize and beans or other available local meals.

This daily meal helps reduce absenteeism, improves classroom performance, and gives every child the strength to enjoy both learning and play.

Though resources are limited, we do our best to ensure no child goes hungry. Our program is supported through community effort and well-wishers who contribute food, cooking supplies, or even time.

A full stomach brings hope, health, and a chance for a brighter future.

Excursions

Being located in the heart of the Maasai Mara gives our learners a special opportunity — to learn not just from books, but directly from the world around them.

We organize simple excursions and nature walks where children can observe the rich wildlife, explore the natural environment, and learn the importance of conservation. Seeing animals like elephants, lions, zebras, and giraffes in their natural habitat helps learners appreciate the beauty of nature and the need to protect it.

We also teach our pupils to value and understand their Maasai culture, including traditional songs, stories, dress, and customs. These lessons strengthen their identity and help them take pride in their heritage.

By combining classroom lessons with real-life experiences in the Mara, we give our children an education that is both deep and meaningful.

Music lessons

At Mara Kileleoni School, music is more than just a subject — it's a joyful expression of culture, creativity, and identity.

Our music program introduces learners to the beauty of rhythm, song, and traditional Maasai instruments. Through singing, drumming, dancing, and storytelling, children gain confidence, develop teamwork, and connect with their heritage.

Though we have limited resources, our students show great passion and talent. We incorporate both modern and traditional music styles, helping learners appreciate their roots while exploring new sounds.

We welcome any support in the form of instruments, training, or partnerships to help us grow this vital part of our school life.

Music lifts our spirits, builds unity, and gives our children a voice.

Our Courses

Art Course

Art is a wonderful part of learning that allows children to express their imagination and creativity. At our school, learners enjoy art lessons that involve drawing, painting, and making crafts using simple, everyday materials. They learn to sketch objects from their surroundings, explore colors, and create beautiful pieces through hands-on practice.

Cultural art also plays a special role, helping learners understand patterns, symbols, and visual storytelling. As they experiment with clay, beads, and paper, pupils not only improve their creativity but also develop focus, coordination, and confidence. Each child is given the freedom to explore their unique talents and enjoy the process of making something with their own hands.

We believe that through art, children grow in both skill and self-expression — learning to see and shape the world around them in beautiful ways.

Music Course

Music is part of everyday learning at our school. Learners enjoy singing, rhythm, and exploring both traditional and modern songs. These lessons help build confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Music also connects pupils to culture and brings joy to the learning experience..

Sport Course

sports play a key role in shaping well-rounded students by promoting teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness. Our sports program focuses on football (boys and girls) and athletics/cross country, giving learners opportunities to train, compete, and grow their talents. Through regular inter-school competitions and friendly matches, our students proudly represent the school while developing confidence, resilience, and school spirit. At Mara Kileleoni, we believe that “Education is Light for Life”, and sports are part of that light—building strength, character, and a healthy lifestyle for every learner.
